One full day of Training

Part 1: Active Listening (Core Competency 5): This session explores ICF Core Competency 5 – Active Listening. The session begins with an examination of what Active Listening means as defined by the ICF. Students will learn about common listening blocks and how understanding and engaging in active listening help overcome these blocks. Students will also learn tips and techniques for how to listen without an agenda, how to recognize non-verbal communication and how to move toward Level 3 Listening. The session includes live demonstrations, time for small group discussion, 40 minutes of one-to-one practice coaching and one hour of small group mentor coaching.

Part 2: Powerful Questioning (Core Competency 6): This session explores ICF Core Competency 6 – Powerful Questioning. Students are introduced to Motivational Interviewing as an approach that promotes the goals that the ICF defines for Powerful Questioning. Through a review of MI techniques, students will learn about the importance of expressing empathy, evoking the client’s own thoughts and ideas without imposing an agenda, asking open-ended questions and encouraging the client’s own desire to achieve change. The session includes live demonstrations, time for small group discussion, 40 minutes of one-to-one practice coaching and one hour of small group mentor coaching.
